A Warm Introduction to My Journey

Initiating our new blog

Eight months ago, I arrived in the breathtaking Andalusian countryside in the south of Spain, my first trip to Europe, following just ten days in Germany earlier that same month. As I reflect on that time, I realize how much was bubbling inside me: excitement, curiosity, a little nervousness, and yes, even a touch of fear of the unknown.

I’ve always considered myself a risk-taker, someone who embraces the adventure of life, carefully, though, not always with full certainty. Some have said I didn’t always think things through, while others have celebrated my ability to leap into the unknown with joy. What do I think of it? I’m still flowing, still discovering who I am in this new chapter of my life. But rest assured, I’ll share the unfolding journey with you.

This time has been full of “firsts” for me, from cultural experiences to lifestyle changes:

  • My first time in Europe, far from my ancestral home in Kenya.
  • My first long-term relationship, which blossomed into a beautiful, committed partnership (marriage) after a whirlwind of unforgettable moments on the road.
  • My first experience in places where English isn’t the common language, and where I was affectionately called “Negra.”
  • My first real sense of living in a small village, not just visiting.
  • My first taste of the changing seasons, so different from the year-round warmth of Kenya.

Less than a month after arriving, I was exhausted by 10 p.m, only to see children joyously running through the village streets while I was still adjusting to the rhythm of a new life. I had been given the role of “space holder” in a community project, with responsibilities and expectations that came fast and strong, less than three weeks into my stay.

It was a profound and humbling experience, uprooted from everything I knew and replanted in a new world. I faced many challenges: allergies, new foods, shared spaces, and stepping into a project already in motion. Yet, I found myself slowly blossoming in this new soil. At first, I wanted to shrink, to hide, which felt so foreign to my nature.

My first summer was a blend of frustration and reward. I have always had a “big personality”,some see it as powerful, while others find it both powerful and innocent in equal measure. I’m so grateful for the beautiful souls I met during that summer. It was a time of deep connection, though sometimes overwhelming, as everyone’s input came from a place of love and authenticity.

As the seasons passed, I grew to cherish the pure love and unwavering support from the villagers. Their acceptance of who we are, regardless of lifestyle or personal choices, and their joy in meeting new faces has filled my heart in ways I can’t fully express.

This is just a little glimpse of who I am and what this journey means to me. I look forward to sharing more stories with you, blending the present with reflections from my past. Writing this feels like speaking to old friends—those I’ve met along the way and those I’m yet to meet. Sending out my love to, Tim, Hala, Mario, Paul, Leo, Kevin, Manuel, Melita, ( You too, mpenzi Achim) and all my “firsts”.

I’m really looking forward to catching up with you next week on Thursday midmorning to dive deeper into my story. It means so much to share this journey with you. Until then, take care and have a wonderful weekend❤️.

Wambui.
